Unity Foundation of LaPorte County Scholarship App

The Unity Foundation of La Porte County Community Scholarship application is now available online!

Unity Foundation Common Application (Application Deadline: March 31, 2018)

The common application was designed to allow students to apply for several different scholarships through one application. The common application evaluates the responses provided and matches applicants with the scholarships for which they may be eligible. The common application saves students time by requiring only one application to be completed for most Unity Foundation scholarships. When the student goes through the initial questions on the website and is then matched to various scholarships, they should choose to complete the Common Application first as it will auto-fill into the other applications. To start the process, they should use the GREEN Begin Search button on the page that this links to: Additional scholarships administered by Unity Foundation of La Porte County:Robert J Hiler Memorial Scholarship (Opening mid-January – Deadline March 31, 2018)Scholarships for natural or legally adopted children of a Hiler Industries employee. Employee must have worked for Hiler Industries for at least one (1) year. Applicants must be in good academic standing and be pursuing an undergraduate bachelor degree from an accredited, tax-exempt college or university. Recipients must enroll as full-time students.

Kabelin Family Scholarship Application (Application Deadline: March 31, 2018)

Current graduating high school seniors who have a blood- or marriage-related parent or grandparent employed at Kabelin Ace Hardware for a minimum of two years OR have themselves worked at Kabelin Ace Hardware for a minimum of one year. Applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate degree from an accredited, tax-exempt college or university. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and demonstrate achievement based on academics, extra-curricular activities, community involvement, and employment history.

Diane K. Bamberth Memorial Award Nomination Form (Nomination Deadline: March 31, 2018)

Current graduating high school seniors of La Porte High School pursuing an undergraduate bachelor degree from an accredited, tax-exempt college or university. Applicants will demonstrate the courage and character of Diane Kay Bamberth through community service, leadership, humility, courage, tenacity, and has exhibited strength through diversity, and a strong moral fiber. Recipients must enroll as full-time students. Nominators may be: Colleague, Clergy, Community Member, Family Member, Professor/Teacher, Other.

Jan Nona Environmental Stewardship Award Nomination Form (Nomination Deadline: March 31, 2018)

Residents of La Porte or Porter County having demonstrated success in moving beyond ordinary citizenship to activist in the area of environmental protection. This is not for studetns only; it is also for adults. Students may even wish to nominate a teacher. The award is made to a non-profit in honor of the recipient. Nominators may be: Community Member, Family Member, Professor/Teacher, Self, Other.

New Day Foundation’s Connie Yagelski-Marhanka Music Scholarship Application (Postmark Deadline: April 6, 2018)

These scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors of La Porte County who are including music in their studies towards a degree or career. Applicants must download the scholarship application and mail printed application, essay, and transcript to: New Day Foundation, Scholarship Committee, 8101 W Country Lane, Michigan City, IN 46360.

Susan Hay Hemminger Scholarship Foundation Application (Postmark Deadline: April 15, 2018)

There are four award criteria: financial need, academic achievement, community service / leadership, and ability & commitment. Applicants must be legal residents of La Porte County, Indiana, graduates of a high school district the includes La Porte County in its boundaries, and accepted/enrolled in a two- or four-year undergraduate program at an accredited institution. Applications must be downloaded and mailed to: Susan Hay Hemminger Scholarship PO Box 9242 Michigan City, IN 46361.

The Michigan City Chapter of the Drifters Scholarship Application (Postmark Deadline: April 15, 2018)

The Greater Michigan City Chapter of the Drifters, Inc. is offering this scholarship to local area students in effort to financially assist a distinguished African-American and/or other minority undergraduate student of Michigan City High School pursuing higher education. This application must be postmarked no later than April 15, 2018.

Wells Scholar Information

Seniors interested in applying to be a Wells Scholar at IU Bloomington for the 18-19 school year need to pick up information in the Counseling Office by next Thursday, September the 14th.
 
Interested students should have
  • Shown exceptional qualities of character and leadership
  • Been significantly involved in extracurricular activities
  • Demonstrated a concern for their community
  • Excelled in terms of class rank, grade point average, and performance on standardized tests

In the past, successful Wells nominees have typically:

  • Ranked in the top 5 percent of their class
  • Compiled a GPA of 3.9 or higher on a 4.0 scale
  • Scored 1400 or higher on the combined SAT Critical Reading and Mathematics tests, or 32 (composite) or higher on the ACT
  • Shown a pattern of serious commitment to one or more activities outside of class
