NOTICE OF SCHOOL BOARD VACANCY AND INVITATION TO CANDIDATES FOR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERSHIP

The La Porte Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees announces a vacancy following the resignation of Justin Holmquest on 1/29/26. The Board is now accepting letters of interest from qualified community members interested in serving the remainder of the term, which expires on 12/31/26.

Per Indiana Code 20-23-4-30, the remaining school board members must, by majority vote, appoint an individual to fill the board vacancy within 30 days. The appointee must live within the boundaries of the La Porte Community School Corporation and shall serve the balance of the term of the seat being vacated. The individual appointed must possess the qualifications provided for a regularly elected or appointed governing body member filling the office.

Board Qualifications

In order to serve as a school board member of the La Porte Community School Corporation, a candidate must:

  1. Have resided within school corporation boundaries for at least one year,

  2. be at least 21 years of age, and

  3. be a registered voter in the LPCSC voting district.

Voters can verify their registration status at https://indianavoters.in.gov/.

Note:  Background checks will be conducted on the selected appointee.

How to Apply

Interested individuals should submit a letter of interest outlining their qualifications to the Office of the Superintendent via email to gteets@lpcsc.k12.in.us or via hand delivery to 1000 Harrison St., La Porte, IN.

Key Dates

Letters of interest will be accepted through Tuesday, February 10, 2026.

In accordance with Indiana's Open Door Law, candidate interviews will be conducted at a public meeting on February 11, 2026, at 1000 Harrison St., La Porte, IN and a public vote will be held at a special School Board Meeting on February 12, 2026 at 1000 Harrison St., La Porte, IN to appoint and swear in the new board member. The public is welcome to attend and observe both meetings.

Understanding the Process

Indiana Code 20-23-4-30 requires the Board to fill the vacancy within 30 days through appointment rather than a special election. Indiana's Open Door Law (IC 5-14-1.5-6.1) requires that interviews of prospective appointees be conducted in public meetings, ensuring transparency in the selection process.

The appointed member will serve until the current term expires on December 31, 2026.
