Message About Curriculum

Recently course standards, curriculum resources, and teaching methods have been the focus of legislative and public debate. Through our Guaranteed and Viable continuous improvement actions, LPCSC has been committed to guaranteeing a common and viable curriculum for our students and staff. Beyond this work to guarantee a common, viable curriculum, we have embraced the public interest in our curriculum and we are working to educate parents and the community about our curriculum. One of our efforts in this area is a goal to post course and grade level standard maps which outline what the standards are and when during the course of the school year they are introduced and reinforced. The following course/grade level curriculum details are a result of our efforts to educate and practice transparency.

What are standards?

Indiana’s academic standards are benchmark measures that define what students should know and be able to do at specified grade levels beginning in kindergarten and progressing through grade twelve. The standards are promulgated as state regulations. As such, they must be used as the basis for curriculum and instruction in Indiana's accredited schools.

LPCSC Curriculum

The LaPorte Community School Corporation provides a guaranteed and viable curriculum to support student learning and growth. Curriculum refers to what students learn while viable refers to having the time to teach it. A guaranteed and viable curriculum is at the heart of what we do. All elementary and secondary course curriculum follows the Indiana State Standards which identify what students should know and be able to do.

Per IC 20-18-2-2.7, “curricular materials” means “systematically organized material designed to provide a specific level of instruction in a subject matter category, including:

(1)    books

(2)    hardware that will be consumed, accessed, or used by a single student during a semester or school year;

(3)    computer software; and digital content.”
