La Porte Community School Corporation and Healthy Communities Partner To Help Teens Quit Smoking

During the 2000-2001 school year, La Porte Community School Corporation was contacted by Healthy Communities with the concern that middle school and high school students were not aware of the immediate health risks of experimenting and becoming involved with tobacco use and the serious health implications for the future and shortly thereafter the TAP & TEG program was implemented.

The programs, as defined by the Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Agency are:

Intervening With Teen Tobacco Users (TEG) is a practical, science-based program that effectively deals with students who violate a school's tobacco policy.  Used frequently as an alternative to suspension, this 8-session program teaches the dangers and negative consequences of tobacco use and encourages teens to adopt healthier lifestyles, move closer to quitting, and enroll in a voluntary cessation program, such as TAP.

Helping Teens Stop Using Tobacco (TAP) provides tobacco-using youth with the options, resources, education, motivation, and support to stop using tobacco. An 8-session, voluntary program includes motivational components that work together to help students take the necessary action steps to quit.

Program Facilitators, who teach the sessions, were educated on smoking cession in order for them to increase student awareness at the middle school and high school levels on the dangers of smoking tobacco, smoking marijuana, chewing tobacco, and chewing snuff.

La Porte Community School Corporation continues to run the TAP & TEG programs yearly with highly interactive sessions which include student discussion, student oral response, student assessment of current tobacco use, community speaker presentations, teaching and interactive videos, and workbook completion.

In addition, the school administrators continue to work with our local juvenile courts and city police to offer the TEG program as an alternative to paying tickets for tobacco use on school grounds as well as the TAP program for teens with repeat tickets.
