LPHS Envirothon Team Honored at Board Meeting
Mrs. Starr Rice and the LPHS Envirothon Team were recognized.

May 9, 2022 - The Envirothon Team studies five areas:  Garbage and Wastelands, Forestry, Wildlife, Soil, and Aquatics.  The team completed a 17-minute presentation focused on the Kingsbury Ordinance Plant, specifically how to clean and address the pollution issues in the area.  Sara Villa was recognized for her participation in the team that won third place at regionals, which missed going to state by only one point.  Brayden Sobecki (10) was recognized for his participation on the state-qualifying team also consisting of Micheal St Arnauld (9), Sydney Hill (11), Issac Chezem (12), and Kadin Leason (12), which came in fourth place overall at state.  The team was tied for second place in the Written category, but lost the tiebreaker for third place and finished in fifth place overall.  Mrs. Rice discussed that the Envirothon Team had a very successful year and commended the students for their exceptional efforts.

Science Olympiad Team Honored at Board Meeting
Mrs. Monica Owens and the LPHS Science Olympiad Team were recognized.

May 9, 2022 - Mrs. Owens discussed that the team had their first invitational at Whiting, which was the first in-person event in two years due to the pandemic.  A second invitational followed at Notre Dame.  The team competed in the regional competition at Northridge, which qualified them to compete at the State Science Olympiad hosted at Purdue in March.  The team competed in 21 events overall. Ian Bos (10) and Hunter Quadlin (9) won a 5th place medal in WiFi Lab.  Chase Collins (10) and Hunter Quadlin (9) won a 5th place medal in Astronomy.  Julia Billings (12), Lily Alberts (12), Wesley Owens (12), James Collins (12) were in attendance and were recognized for participation on the LPHS Science Olympiad Team.  Mrs. Owens commended James Collins and Wesley Owens for their commitment to Science Olympiad for the past seven years, with both having participated since 6th grade.

LPHS Skills USA Team Honored at Board Meeting
Dr. Chris Alber recognized the Skills USA team on behalf of Mr. Don Varda, who was unable to attend.

May 9, 2022 - Seniors Grant Ott-Large and Jake Ellis won the State Championship Gold Division in Television/Video Production.  Seniors Sara Villa and Sara Emery won 2nd place in the Skills USA competition Television/Video Production category. This year's theme was "United as One."  Students played their 60-second video to the Board, which both focused on bringing people together during difficult times.  Dr. Alber recognized Hallee Novak (11) as Visual Communications Student of the Year.

Among the eighteen men named to the 2022 Team, based on outstanding accomplishments as a senior basketball player 25 years ago, was Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education, Dr. Ben Tonagel. February 24, 2022 - The LPHS FFA hosted their annual Petting Zoo to continue celebrating FFA Week! LPHS teamed up with B100 Radio Station on their Quest for St. Jude. Every year, B100 tries to raise 1 million pennies to donate to St. Jude Children's Hospital and this year LPHS put an FFA twist on it by hosting a penny war among different teachers in the school. The teacher with the most money in their bucket had to "Kiss the Cow" at the petting zoo. The fun-natured event raised $567 dollars for St. Jude with Mr. Jeffers raising the most money and giving the sweet bovine a smooch for charity.

December 14, 2021 - This week, Dr. Francesconi stopped by to visit the Kingsford Heights Robotics Team. The stellar coaches, Wendy Hiemstra, Calvin Trusty, and Chris Frank, have been together for many years and are an outstanding example of teamwork. They attend conferences on technology and programming to improve their ability and enhance the program. In fact, Kingsford Heights plans to host a state VEX Robotics qualifier January 29, 2022. They hope to have about 20 schools from NW Indiana in attendance along with some of the LPCSC teams.

The partnership with NorthShore Health Centers will benefit our staff in terms of cost and convenience with their wellness visits.
